After getting their lunch to go, and bribing Dover with caramel twists Hayden bought from a cart, they spent the rest of the afternoon trudging all over the city collecting increasingly rude messages from Margarethe.

They’d visited an art museum and found a mocking note in a room full of sculptures, all featuring the president in various positions and forms. Kit nearly fell apart laughing at the statue that depicted the president naked to the waist, with bulging pectorals and bicep muscles. He rode a miniature elephant, and the creature’s trunk was… well, the composition was really embarrassing.

Next, they’d visited two Azurian temples—beautiful structures made of honed basalt embedded with pale moonstones. Inside, the statues of Wayfair’s former deities had their faces chiseled off, replaced by more paintings of the president.

Kit couldn’t hide her revulsion as she took in the president’s portraits.

Hayden found two more notes in each temple, one in an empty vessel for holy water, another on a prayer rug. One simply read, “Ha, ha, ha.” The other was a sketch Hayden couldn’t decipher. Kit said it was a drawing of the Wayfarian equivalent of flipping someone the bird. Hayden crumpled it in his hand.

“This is clearly a wild goose chase,” complained Kit as she leaned against a fence post. “By now, Margarethe has chartered a boat and is headed out to the palace to find the waterdogs. Or she’s hunting for the leviathan. This is just a fairy trick to keep you distracted.”

“One more try,” Hayden said, his fist still clenched on the crumpled note.

Kit sighed. “I thought Sera was adamant about searching for the gemstones. She doesn’t want you to rescue her.”

He knew Kit was right. But the chase was driving him mad. Besides, if he could locate Sera, they could follow Margarethe to Undersea. He had to reach the end of the breadcrumbs.

It took buying Dover an enormous powdered donut to coax him into one more errand.

Hayden led the way to a tidy brick boarding house with “Madam Trafford’s Home for Elegant Ladies” painted in black over the maroon doorway. A tour of the premises led them to another note from Margarethe. This one featured a drawing of a steaming pile of poop. An arrow pointed to it with one word that read, “You.”

“That’s it,” said Kit, crossing her arms. “We’ve wasted the entire day on this. We’re done.”

Defeated, Hayden ignored the feeble tug in his chest that led to the next note and allowed Dover to take them to an outdoor café for dinner.

Beneath a wide awning, several metal tables and chairs were arranged inside a bricked off patio. Their waiter had brightly colored feathers instead of hair and wore a vibrant purple tuxedo.

“Enjoy,” he said, as he placed a plate of skewered shrimp on the table.

Hayden could only poke at it with a sullen expression on his face.

Between mouthfuls of fish soup, Kit attempted to coax information from Dover.

“Is there no way to travel to Undersea? A clever tour guide like you might know
